One-timers with … Sean Mostrom

There is more to University of Denver defenseman Sean Mostrom than meets the eye.

When the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder steps on the ice, he’s all business and he’s not afraid to let opponents “know he’s there”. Off the ice, he’s more reserved, a man of few words with a keen sense of humor. A huge fan of the outdoors, he has been known to take Pioneers teammates on epic fishing expeditions (just don’t ask him for specifics about where).

The junior took time recently to speak with Magness Mayhem for our first edition of One-timers for the 2017-18 DU hockey season.

How did you spend your summer?

This was the first one I spent in Colorado. I did some fishing and coaching youth hockey. Fly fishing for trout in Gunnison, Steamboat and locally on the South Platte. I can’t give up the secret spots, obviously, but I get around to the streams. I worked at Monty’s camp and at early morning sessions in Littleton.

If you could go fishing with anyone, who would it be?

That’s tough. Probably my dad. Try to get him out. I don’t have a celebrity in mind.

What is the breakfast of champions?

I like Whole Foods’ breakfast burritos. I have that on a regular basis during the week.

Who is the Pioneers’ team DJ this year?

Devin Cooley.

A freshman has control of the music?

He has a whole DJ rig he’s been bringing over to the house. He laid down the investment and he’s relishing that role.

Did you have a favorite player growing up in Minnesota?

I know he’s not a defenseman, but Marian Gaborik, back when he played for the Wild. I met him a couple times when I was a young player. I always looked up to him.

Is there one team comedian who stands out?

Liam Finlay. He’s hilarious.

What’s the best Halloween costume you’ve ever seen?

I have to pass on that one.

A teammate?

Like I said …

Whose skill level on the Pioneers blows you away?

(Henrik) Borgstrom, (Troy) Terry and (Dylan) Gambrell are all incredible. I’m in awe at every practice by a couple of things they do. They’re going to be pretty hard to stop this year.

Is there a teammate who would make a good president?

Probably Erich Fear. He can retain a lot of information and he’s well-spoken.

Do you have a favorite road trip during your time at DU?

I always like going to Minneapolis because that’s where I’m from. Going to Tampa Bay (for the 2016 Frozen Four) was pretty incredible. They really set the stage for everyone. They outdid themselves with the planning of events. Maybe it was just the warm weather, which we had’nt had in a while. They had a dinner for us in the beach area. A big buffet. They had a big welcoming when you got off the plane with a bunch of people in pirate suits. The event planning was pretty good on that one.

Who’s the biggest rival for DU?

I’d still say North Dakota. Duluth is up there. It’s hard not to really give it to North Dakota when we play them.

Last question, and it’s a changeup, if Monty was a superhero, who would he be?

Let’s go with Superman.
