Early look at No. 4 Notre Dame

No. 1 Denver at No. 4 Notre Dame

Friday at 5:05 p.m. and Saturday at 4:05 p.m.

Notre Dame update

The Irish joined the Big Ten for hockey only this season and celebrated by winning their first two games, a sweep of Alabama-Huntsville this past weekend, 5-3 and 4-0. They earlier defeated the U.S. National Team Development Program’s Under-18 team, 4-3, in an exhibition. You can bet the 18 returning players in Notre Dame’s lineup would love to extract a measure of revenge this weekend against a Pioneers program that unceremoniously booted them from the Frozen Four, 6-1.

Offense

Notre Dame traded second-period goals with UAH before Jake Evans scored twice in the third period to salt away the first game. Evans’ first goal was a power-play strike, one of two in five tries the Irish tallied. Jordan Gross had three assists and Andrew Oglevie added two. That duo combined for Notre Dame’s first three goals on Saturday, with Evans assisting on Oglevie’s pair. The Irish also added another power-play goal. The duo of Evans and Oglevie did a majority of the damage against the Chargers, but defensemen Gross, Bobby Nardella and Dennis Gilbert also scored goals.

Defense

Coloradoan Cale Morris, a sophomore, stopped 25 of 28 shots on Friday, while freshman Dylan St. Cyr shut out the Chargers on Saturday, stopping 34 shots. The Irish have killed nine of 10 penalties.
