Borgstrom, Davies make NCHC All-Rookie Team

In what likely is the first of many postseason acknowledgements for top-ranked Denver, two members of its freshman class were feted by the NCHC on Tuesday.

Center Henrik Borgstrom and defenseman Michael Davies were selected to the league’s all-rookie team, joining North Dakota forward Tyson Jost, Minnesota-Duluth forward Joey Anderson, St. Cloud State defenseman Jack Ahcan and Western Michigan goaltender Ben Blacker.

Borgstrom was the NCHC’s top-scoring rookie with 19 points (12 goals) in 20 games. He also led league newcomers in game-winning goals with five. Overall, Borgstrom has 36 points (tied for 29th nationally) and 21 goals, the latter number most among NCAA freshmen. His eight power-play goals are tied for 13th in Division I, and he is coming off a four-goal weekend at Omaha, where the Pioneers wrapped up their first Penrose Cup championship in the four years of its existence as the prize for the NCHC’s regular-season winner.

Davies had eight of his 11 points in 24 NCHC games and his plus-17 was tops among conference rookies. He has teamed with junior Tariq Hammond to form a strong pairing that has helped Denver’s defense become the second-stingiest in Division I. The Pioneers’ goals-allowed average of 1.92 is second only to Bemidji State’s 1.87.
