Stapley’s three goals spark No. 12 Denver’s rout of ASU

Denver exorcised a couple of ghosts on Friday night at Arizona State.

First, the No. 12 Pioneers ended a four-game road slump. Second, they did not allow the hosts to score a power-play goal after giving up six of them on opening weekend at Denver.

Add it up, and DU took 6-2 non-conference victory that ran its win streak to five games.

Senior Brett Stapley scored three goals, freshman linemate Jack Devine got the first of what likely will be many during his DU career, and Carter Savoie (12th) and Cameron Wright (6th) continued their respective vendettas against opposing goalies.

Speaking of the masked men, DU junior Magnus Chrona made 31 saves as the Sun Devils (7-8) kept the pressure on all game.

Bobby Brink added two assists for the Pioneers (9-4), who broke the game open with a four-goal third period courtesy of Savoie, Stapley twice and Devin.

Colin Theisen and Jordan Sandhu (shorthanded) struck for ASU, which got 23 saves from Ben Kraws.

The teams play again Saturday at 7 p.m.
