One-timers with … Cameron Wright

It isn’t often one of the NCAA hockey’s top 20 scorers falls into your lap. Nor was it common for players receive a fifth season of eligibility (until this past offseason when the NCAA said it was so).

But that is what exactly what happened when forward Cameron Wright transferred to Denver last spring. The affable winger from Newmarket, Ontario, has made himself at home on one of Denver’s top lines, playing with freshmen Massimo Rizzo and Carter Mazur. Those two have combined for seven goals in four games, and Wright joined them on the scoresheet on Saturday with his first DU goal and an assist (his second of the season) against Air Force. Wright had a second goal waved off.

Cameron Wright

Wright brings an excellent scoring pedigree. He had 13 goals and 29 points in 31 games for Bowling Green last season, when he finished 17th in Division I scoring. The year before he lit the lamp 20 times in 38 games. Overall, he scored 101 points for the Falcons.

He’s also be a model of durability. He played in all 69 games for Bowling Green the past two seasons and 144 of 151 games in his four campaigns in Ohio.

He graciously took time to speak with Magness Mayhem before practice recently.

What led to your transferring to DU? What appealed to you?

Playing college hockey for four years you know what Denver is all about. They’re a winning program and a team that’s been in the NCAAs and the Frozen Four a bunch. Eight national championships. That speaks to how good of a program they are. When I entered the (transfer) portal and had that extra year, I got a call from (DU assistant coach) Tavis MacMillan and talked to the coaches. The opportunity they were going to give me, it was a no-brainer for me. As a kid from coming from Ontario and then playing in the middle of Ohio, getting to come out to Denver, Colorado, was something I couldn’t pass up. Given this opportunity to play with players like this who are going to move on and be pro hockey players, I was so lucky to get it. I’m so fortunate every day to be here.

Now that you’ve had some time to adjust, what do you like the most about Denver?

I got here early in the summer, and it was fun. A lot of golf and nice weather. In the school, it’s exciting how much everyone in the athletics program cares and how much they take care of you. And they want to see us win. Another thing is how welcoming the coaching staff and the team has been. I was the only transfer coming in here, so it was definitely nerve wracking, but they’ve welcomed me so much. I feel like I’m part of the team for sure.

I’m sure there are times you miss home, so if it was possible, which of these Canadian delicacies would you rather have access to – Tim Horton’s or Old Dutch Ketchup Chips?

Actually I’m a big ketchup chips fan, but I like the Timmy’s Double-doubles, those are a staple in the mornings for me, so I guess it’s got to be Tim Horton’s.

If I had one of them right now, which would you want?

I’d say ketchup chips. A lot of people think those sound disgusting but people would really enjoy ketchup chips if we had them here. They’re unreal.

Do you have a favorite Halloween candy?

Again I’m going to go Canadian. I’m a Coffee Crisp guy. Have you had Coffee Crisps

I have. They’re great. Especially with coffee!

Those are my favorite. I could eat too many of those pretty easily around Halloween.

I’m not trying to turn this into a Food Network interview, but I like to ask players about the most important meal of the day, so what is your breakfast of champions?

I’m pretty standard. I like eggs. I’m a big omelette guy. Maybe some peppers or ham or sausage in there. I’m not a big bacon guy or pancake or French toast guy.

What was your favorite Halloween costume growing up?

I had a couple. A good one I always liked was – I’m a big Back to the Future Fan – so  Marty McFly. My dad’s a big Michael J. Fox fan, so he wanted me to be Marty McFly.

Is there a team comedian you’ve picked up on in the locker room?

Do you mean how much they talk or that they’re actually funny? There’s a couple for sure. Matty Davis, the freshman goalie, he’s pretty funny and really loud. Then (senior Brett) Stapley is a really funny guy. He always has witty comments. I sit right near him so I hear a lot of them.

Which road trip are you looking forward to the most this season?

I’m looking forward to going to Boston and Providence a lot. I’ve got three ex-teammates on Boston College (goalie Eric Dop, forward Brandon Kruse and defenseman Justin Wills), so that will be exciting to go play them. And North Dakota, I think everyone would say that, right? Just to see that rink and that atmosphere. I also have an ex-teammate from BG on there, too (forward Connor Ford). Those are the two biggies.

We thank Cameron for his time and wish him well this season!
