Denver Gutts out win in opener at Fairbanks

Sophomore center Cole Guttman helped No. 2 Denver to its first lead Saturday then clinched a 4-3 victory with a late goal at Fairbanks, Alaska.

The Pioneers began their 70th season by chasing the game a bit, trailing 2-1 after a first period in which they were outshot16-14. But junior Kohen Olischefski‘s power-play strike and freshman Bobby Brink‘s tally off a feed from Guttman with 8:45 to go gave DU its first lead.

The spirited Nanooks tied the score at 3 with exactly 8 minutes left in game on Steven Jandric‘s goal. Guttman, who had 14 goals last season, got his first of this season when he finished a play classmate Emilio Pettersen initiated with only 1:02 remaining.

The Pioneers started freshman Magnus Chrona, like Guttman a Tampa Bay Lightning prospect, in net. The towering Swede made 30 stops. Junior Ryan Barrow also scored for DU.

DU generated 36 shots after the Nanooks took the first 12 of the game.
