The Gold Pan makes itself at home in Denver, again

No. 3 Denver made a statement Friday night at World Arena in Colorado Springs.

The Pioneers blitzed Colorado College with three second-period goals en route to a 5-1 NCHC victory that gave them possession of The Gold Pan for the fourth consecutive season and the 13th time in the 25 years of the competition.

In a demonstration of its enviable depth, Denver (17-6-6, 11-4-4-3 NCHC) had 10 players find the scoresheet and that with junior forward Troy Terry competing in the Olympics for Team USA a half a world away.

Tanner Jaillet stopped 19 of 20 shots on goal to continue his sparking play of the past three months. It was the 14th time this season he’s allowed zero goals or one goal, and the 11th such time since the beginning of December.

Henrik Borgström and Jarid Lukosevicius had bookend goals for the Pioneers to go with an assist, and Dylan Gambrell added two helpers. Borgström’s tally came with 5:33 to go in the first period, while Lukosevicius closed the scoring in the third period.

In between, Colorado College (12-13-4, ) gave up the dreaded first-minute and last-minute goal in the second period. Colin Staub‘s tally from Liam Finlay, the guy who took Terry’s spot on the top line, made it 2-0 exactly 1 minute into the second, and Logan O’Connor made it 4-1 with 11 seconds to play in the period.

After Brian Williams drew the Tigers to 2-1, DU freshman Kohen Olischefski re-extended the lead to 3-1.

Notable

Denver outshot CC 41-20. … Neither teams scored on their five power plays. … CC forward Kade Kehoe was assessed a major and a game misconduct for spearing after the final horn. By rule, he will have to miss Saturday’s game.

Denver’s three stars

  1. Henrik Borgstrom. His goal got the party started for DU and he had a hand in Colin Staub’s game-winner.
  2. Tanner Jaillet. When CC did have chances, the senior stood tall.
  3. Jarid Lukosevicius. Two more points for the junior, including his 14th goal.
