Pioneers emerge victorious, unscathed from exhibition

Sophomores Tyson McLellan and Liam Finlay and junior Troy Terry scored goals, and a trio of Denver goaltenders combined to stop 30 shots in a 3-1 exhibition victory over the University of Lethbridge on Sunday night at Magness Arena.

The Pioneers, who open their regular season in two weeks at Notre Dame, and their fans got a look at their nine freshmen for the first time, including goaltenders Dayton Rasmussen and Devin Cooley.

Reigning Mike Richter Award winner Tanner Jaillet stopped all eight shots he saw in the first period. Rasmussen played all of the second period and slightly more than half of the third, making 18 saves in the process and allowing Lethbridge’s lone goal. Cooley made four stops in the closing minutes.

“I was happy with the freshmen (goalies),” said DU coach Jim Montgomery told Bill Rogan after the PioneerVision telecast. “Especially Dayton. I loved the way he competed.”

Overall, the coach was pleased with the Pioneers’ play in the first half of the game but a bit less so from then on. Just as important was no one sustained an injury.

“The biggest takeaway is we’re not in game shape,” he said. “We have a lot of work to do before we play Notre Dame.

“I was pleased with the creativity from a lot of players, especially the defensemen.”

The Pioneers’ next home game is Oct. 20 against Lake Superior State, when they will raise their 2017 national championship banner to the Magness Arena rafters.
