Cowley backstops DU to 11th win in a row

If you believe it’s best to head into the postseason on a roll, I’d like to introduce you to Denver’s top-ranked hockey team.

The Pioneers blanked Nebraska-Omaha, 3-0, on Saturday to extend their overall winning streak to 11 games and their run vs. the Mavericks to 10 games over the past two seasons.

Speaking of streaking, freshman Henrik Borgstrom scored two goals for the second night in a row. His 21 goals overall lead all NCAA freshmen. It also gave him four games in a row with goals. Senior Emil Romig also scored 38 seconds into the third period for the Pioneers (26-6-4, 18-3-3-2 NCHC).

Here are some takeaways from the win:

  1. Borgstrom had another show-stopping move to give DU a 1-0 lead with 4:36 to go in the second period. Overlooked in the sequence was senior captain Will Butcher getting his 100th career assist. Borgstrom’s second goal went into an empty net.
  2. Not only was a great to see Evan Cowley get the start in net, but the senior pitched a 28-save shutout. It was just the ninth appearance (and fourth start) of the season for Cowley, who has watched junior Tanner Jaillet put together a season for the ages. By all accounts Cowley has been nothing but supportive throughout. With a GAA of just 1.38 and a save percentage of .946, Cowley gives DU a second, very viable starting option, and one who has played exceptionally well all season. “Evan Cowley was awesome,” DU coach Jim Montgomery told 104.3 FM’s Jay Stickney after the game. “I’ve said all year we have the two best goalies in the conference.”
  3. How comforting is it that DU can play only OK by its standards and pick up a sweep on the road against an opponent that was fighting for home-ice in the playoffs? It was outshot Saturday, it took four minor penalties in the third period and yet emerged with another victory.

Now the Pioneers can set their sights on a few more streaks – adding to a 12-game win streak against NCHC quarterfinal opponent Colorado College and making the league’s Frozen Face-off for the fourth year in a row.

The last word

“We didn’t have our best weekend, but it shows how talented we are,” Montgomery said.
