Pioneers keep Huskies’ brooms in the closet

Turns out Saturday night’s all right for Denver’s hockey team.

For the second weekend in a row the Pioneers showed plenty of fight in successfully avoiding an NCHC road sweep, this time topping host St. Cloud State, 3-1.

Down 1-0 after the first period, DU (16-6-4, 7-3-3-2 NCHC) got goals from Dylan Gambrell (his sixth) and Jarid Lukosevicius (10th) in a 2:21 span midway through the second period to take the lead for good, and defenseman Michael Davies added a power-play tally early in the third period.

“Tonight we seemed to play a lot better after we gave up that goal,” coach Jim Montgomery said. “I’m really proud of our rebound effort. You win the special teams game against St. Cloud, which doesn’t take a lot of penalties, and our five on five was significantly better, and Tanner Jaillet was great in goal, that’s the way you win games in the NCHC.”

Jaillet bounced back from an uneven performance in Friday’s 3-2 overtime loss in which he was relieved by Evan Cowley after the second period to post 37 saves in the victory.

“I loved the way he responded,” Montgomery said. “Last night was probably his worst effort of the year. For a lot of goalies it would have been a good effort. He made some huge saves in the third period.”

Jake Wahlin gave the Huskies (11-12-1, 6-9-1) a lead halfway through the first period and Jeff Smith made 35 saves.

The game featured just three penalties, two on DU, but Davies ensured the Pioneers’ one chance on the power play wasn’t wasted thanks to Davies.

Gambrell ended a nine-game goal drought.

“It was huge,” Montgomery said. “He just started playing with more confidence.”
