Strong and steady, Tariq Hammond is one of the pillars on Denver’s blue line, playing plenty of important minutes, including on the penalty kill.

The 6-foot-2 junior from Calgary took time out this week to hammer away at some of our sweet feeds to the point.

Canadian Thanksgiving was this past week. Let’s start with what you’re thankful for?

I’m thankful for obviously being able to play hockey at a high level. I’m thankful for a great family support system, as well as my friends and teammates.

Did you and some of your teammates celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving together?

We have a bunch of Canadians on the team. Matt Marcinew’s dad was in town and cooked a big feast with everything you can imagine. The food was great and having the all the boys together was special.

Who on the team would make the best President? Or Prime Minister in Canada’s case?

I’d have to say Will Butcher. I think he embodies a good leader and he could get a good following.

What was the highlight of your summer?

I attended the Montreal Canadiens’ development camp. It was a great experience, pretty eye-opening. I wanted to see how I compare to other players. I got to see the insides and outs of the organization.

Were you surprised by anything?

Everything is at your fingertips. Everyone is so kind and friendly. They want you to be at your best.

What is the breakfast of champions?

A couple of eggs scrambled, hash browns. Maybe some bacon or sausage and a strawberry banana smoothie. … I have all the ingredients at the house.

Are you particular about any of your gear?

Not too particular. I dress the same way every practice and game. Change is not the worst thing, but I like to stick with my stuff. I usually put all the left side on first. Keep it the same. The sock tape is done right. We have to wear Warrior pants and gloves and a Bauer helmet, the rest of the gear we can pick what we want.

Who is the team comedian?

This year I think it’s (goalie) Packy Munson. The guy never stops talking. Most of the time you tune it out but he does have some funny things to say.

Who should replace Gabe Levin on Gabbin’ with Gabe?

That’s a tough job to fill. He did such a great job. I could see Rudy Junda or Evan Ritt or any of the seniors could do a good job of it. They’re well spoken guys.

Are you a candidate?

Maybe if they asked me to make a guest appearance. I couldn’t do it regularly.

Are you a music guy? If so, what do you like to listen to?

Yes. I’m a big country music guy. I’ve seen Florida Georgia Line five times, and I got to see Dierks Bentley at Red Rocks recently.

What is your favorite DU memory thus far?

Definitely the trip out to Tampa for the Frozen Four. It didn’t end the way we wanted it to but it was a surreal experience. We’re working toward getting back there.
