Scouting No. 8 Boston University

The Game: No. 5 Denver (3-2) at No. 8 Boston University (2-3), 2 p.m. MDT on 1600/AM

The Series: BU leads 14-13-2. Denver won the most recent meeting, 6-0, on Dec. 29, 2012.

DU update: The Pioneers have the proverbial day game after a night game in Boston. Expect Tanner Jaillet to start in goal. Given coach Jim Montgomery‘s seeming optimism after Friday’s 4-3 loss to Boston College I would expect the lineup to basically remain the same. The biggest positives were Danton Heinen‘s two-goal, one-assist breakout game and the power play finding its grove, going 2-for-4 after scoring just once in the first four games.

BU update: The 2015 NCAA runner-up Terriers return home after consecutive Hockey East losses (5-2 at Connecticut on Tuesday and 4-3 at Merrimack). Senior goalie Sean Maguire was pulled midway through the second period Friday and replaced by sophomore Connor LaCouvee. Neither has a save percentage above .890, though LaCouvee’s GAA of 2.52 is nearly a goal and a half per game better than Maguire’s. … Half of the Terriers’ top eight scorers are defensemen — Brandon Fortunato (5 points), Doyle Somerby (4) and Charlie McAvoy and Brandon Hickey (3 each). All but Somerby are underclassmen. … Up front, senior captain Danny O’Regan and freshman Ryan Cloonan lead the way with five points apiece.

The bottom line: If nothing else, a rested Jaillet (who is coming off a shutout), BU’s unsettled situation in net and the fact the Terriers are coming off two road losses in a four-day span make this game ripe for the picking for the Pioneers.
