How DU’s upcoming opponents fared over the weekend

The fifth-ranked Pioneers face a challenging weekend trip to Boston, playing No. 4 Boston College on Friday at 5 p.m. (MDT) and Boston University at 2 p.m. (MDT) on Saturday. Here is a quick look at how the Eagles and Terriers fared this past weekend:

Boston College spent the weekend just down Interstate 25 playing Colorado College, and you can bet there were some interested spectators carrying Maroon and Gold themed notepads in attendance at World Arena.

The Eagles rode superlative play from junior goaltender Thatcher Demko to a pair of shutouts – 3-0 and 5-0 – en route to the non-conference sweep. BC and Demko (who made 24 saves in the first game and 21 in the second) are on a run of three shutouts in a row overall. On Friday, junior forward Ryan Fitzgerald scored twice and 6-foot-4 sophomore forward Zach Stanford added another goal – all three assisted by freshman Jeremy Bracco – to lift the Eagles in a game that was 1-0 until the final 5:17. On Saturday, the Eagles got two goals from junior forward Adam Gilmour, a goal and two helpers from Sanford and a goal from juniors Austin Cangelosi and Ian McCoshen, a defenseman.

Boston University played host to Connecticut in the first game of a Hockey East home-and-home series, winning 4-2. The rematch is Tuesday night in Connecticut. BU got goals from four players – freshmen Ryan Cloona and Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson, and sophomores Brandon Fortunato and Brandon Hickey – and three assists from senior Danny O’Regan in the win. Senior Sean Maguire stopped 16 of 18 shots.
