The University of Denver will renew acquaintances with Boston University this weekend at Magness Arena. The teams met in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last spring with the Pioneers blowing out the Hockey East power, 7-2. The Terriers won a meeting early in the regular season, 5-4 in overtime
It would be a stretch to expect that kind of outcome given the No. 2 Terriers have added a host of prospects who were high NHL draft picks another few who are expected to be in next June’s Entry Draft.
The Terriers have played two exhibition games, winning by a combined 18-4, then routed Colgate, 6-1, in their regular-season opener Saturday. That’s 24 goals in three games.
Here is a look at what BU, which finished 21-13-5 last season, is bringing to town:
Offense
The Terriers have scoring all over their lineup. Freshman Patrick Harper (a fifth-round pick of Nashville in 2016) had two goals against Colgate after scoring five among his seven points in BU’s first exhibition. Clayton Keller, the No. 7 overall pick in June, had a goal and an assist in the opener after having a hat trick in the first preseason game. They are joined by another freshman who was a first-round pick, Kiefer Bellows. The returning players up front aren’t bad either. 2015 Boston second-rounder Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson had a goal against Colgate and was the Terriers’ third-leading scorer with 30 points last season. Sophomore Jordan Greenway had 26 points. He’s a 2015 second-round pick by Minnesota. The blue line is just about as impressive as it’s anchored by a trio of picks – first-rounder Charlie McAvoy (Boston/2016), who had 25 points last season at BU, freshman second-rounder Chad Krys (Chicago/2016) and junior Brandon Hickey (Calgary).
Defense
Freshman Jake Oettinger got the victory against Colgate, stopping 29 of 30 shots in the process. Like Keller, Bellows and Krys, he played for the U.S. National Team Development Program last season.
Special Teams
The Terriers aren’t afraid to take penalties, but they’re off to a good start killing them off, going 8 for 8 against Colgate. Shockingly, they were just 1 for 7 on the power play in the opener. Yes, they play a lot of freshman on it, but many of them played together for two years at the NTDP so they’re not exactly strangers.
Schedule
Friday at 7:30 p.m. (also on Altitude Sports) and Saturday at 7 p.m. (Altitude 2)
Actually BU sounds pretty frightening. DU’s offense will have to score more than the 2 game average of 1.5 goals to get a victory.
