No. 4 Denver got its power play back on track, four players scored goals, and Magnus Chrona made 25 saves to defeat No. 9 Providence, 4-1, on Friday night at Magness Arena.
Massimo Rizzo and Casey Dornbach each had a goal and an assist, and freshman Rieger Lorenz scored the first goal of his college career for the Pioneers. Rieger, Rizzo and Carter King had power-play goals as DU (3-2) built a 3-0 lead.
Providence (3-1) also scored its goal on the power play, getting a tally with 2:51 to go in the second period from Parker Ford, who drew the penalty that put his team up a man.
Several encouraging signs for Denver
A Pioneers lineup that had been a bit top-heavy in the scoring department got production from both power plays and forward representing three different lines. The defense also was heavily involved as sophomore Shai Buium had assists on the final three goals and junior Mike Benning drew primary assists on King’s and Rizzo’s power-play goals.Chrona, who was excellent in the second game at Massachusetts, continued his strong play, particularly in the first period when Providence generated 14 of its 26 shots.
Denver had 28 shots and its four goals matched the total that the Friars had allowed in their first three games. Philip Svedeback made 24 saves for Providence.
The teams will finish the series Saturday at 6 p.m. That will be preceded by the Pioneers raising their ninth NCAA championship banner to the rafters of Magness Arena.
