Freshman Magnus Chrona made 28 saves for his first NCAA shutout, and No. 2 Denver’s defense did most of the rest of the heavy lifting in a 3-0 non-conference victory over host Alaska Fairbanks on Sunday night.
Chrona was particularly sharp in the second period, when the Pioneers (2-0) were outshot 14-8. DU fashioned a 31-28 shots on goal edge for the game.
Junior captain Ian Mitchell scored a shorthanded goal with 55 seconds left in the second period. That gave Denver all the offense it needed.
His D partner, Griffin Mendel, extended the lead to 2-0 6:07 into the third. A third junior, forward Ryan Barrow, added an empty-net goal with 29 seconds to go. It was Barrow’s second goal in two nights.
Junior goaltender Devin Cooley did not dress for either game for Denver, which continues its 10-day trip by flying to Michigan on Monday. The Pioneers will play next weekend at Lake Superior State.
