Earlier this month Magness Mayhem surveyed the DU hockey team about various player characteristics.
Fourteen of the 25 players on the roster responded (56 percent) through an online survey. All results were anonymous. I’d like to thank the DU players for taking the time to take the survey.
I’d also like to thank the following sponsors for helping make this possible:
Kostoff and Co. at Nova Home Loans – The Right Loan, The Right Lender
Pesta Chiropractic – We’ve Got Your Back, with offices in Centennial and Westminster
SouthEast Auto – Trusted since 1958, and just 2 miles east of the DU campus
First Line Editorial – Your content, from concept to completion
What follows is second of five parts of the survey, along some accompanying analysis.
Part 2: Shooting and stick handling
6 – Which player has the hardest shot?
Jarid Lukosevicius – 7 (54 percent)
Henrik Borgstrom – 2 (15 percent)
Liam Finlay, Dylan Gambrell, Tariq Hammond and Sean Mostrom each received a vote. One voter abstained.
Behind the numbers: Though many of Luko’s goals come close to the net, when he has some space to wind up, run for cover.
7 – Which player has the most accurate shot?
Henrik Borgstrom – 10 (71 percent)
Troy Terry – 2 (14 percent)
Jake Durflinger and Dylan Gambrell also received one vote.
Behind the numbers: Borgstrom has fantastic accuracy, so it’s no surprise he dominated this category. He’s also very good at placing his shots while on the move. Terry’s body of work also speaks for itself.
8 – Which player has the quickest release on his shot?
Jarid Lukosevicius – 5 (36 percent)
Henrik Borgstrom – 4 (29 percent)
Dylan Gambrell – 3 (21 percent)
Troy Terry – 2 (14 percent)
Behind the numbers: Talk to a scout of any ilk these days and you’re likely to hear more about release than pure power. With goaltenders getting bigger and better, the ability to fool them (which Borgstrom is masterful at) or just plain unleash the shot in a hurry (Luko, Gambrell) is a must to be a goal scorer.
9 – Which player is the best overall stick handler?
Troy Terry – 7 (50 percent)
Henrik Borgstrom – 6 (43 percent)
Goaltender Devin Cooley also received a vote.
Behind the numbers: Simply put, the Pioneers have two absolute wizards with the puck on their stick. At the NCAA level, I’m not sure how an opponent can contain Terry and Borgstrom when they’ve got it clicking.
10 – Which player can maneuver through traffic best with the puck on his stick?
Troy Terry – 7 (50 percent)
Henrik Borgstrom – 6 (43 percent)
Erich Fear also received a vote
Behind the numbers: This category takes into account what a player does when he recovers the puck in his zone – can he skate it out safely and move from zone to zone. It also moves into playmaking territory in the offensive zone. Again, Terry and Borgstrom are rare talents in this regard, and it is telling that Borgstrom appeared first or second in every one of these five categories and Terry showed up four times.
