Take 2 with Monty – Boston week

From time to time we talk to DU coach Jim Montgomery about the Pioneers, upcoming opponents and anything else that tickles our fancy. Fortunately, he’s a patient with us.

Today’s topics: How do you prepare differently for a road series against two different teams in two nights? What were some favorite memories playing in Boston? And, do you have an all-time favorite Halloween costume?

Mayhem: What are your points of emphasis for playing two teams in two days on the road, and how do you like to approach road games in general?

Monty: We’re going to preview it as an opportunity to play it like an NCAA Tournament style. We’re playing Friday night and Saturday afternoon. We’re playing two different teams. How we prepare for two different teams in two different days to be able to advance to the Frozen Four, that’s how we’re going to attack it. We’re playing against two quality opponents that are definitely – if you look at the rankings right now – they’re in the NCAA Tournament. It’s great preparation for us that way.

And then we’re also going to talk about our road warrior mentality, being smart, not trying to let their fans get engaged by having scrums, managing the game, slowing it down when the other team has momentum and ways to do that. Just going about our business. It’s great when you go on the road; it’s all about business. You don’t need to put on a show for your fans, you just need to be efficient, you just need to be effective.

Mayhem: In four seasons playing in Hockey East (for Maine) you no doubt have plenty of memories of trips to Boston. Any stand out?

Monty: BC and BU were our biggest rivals. BC my first two years, it took us until half way through my sophomore year to beat them. Then they tailed off my junior and senior years. But BU was always neck and neck with us for the four years. For me as a player, there was a lot of hatred and big rivalries against them.

As a coach, it’s a lot different. We’re going in there against programs we respect a lot but programs we need to beat to take another step as a program to try to make sure we have a real good seed in the NCAA Tournament this year.

Mayhem: Your game Saturday happens to fall on Halloween. Do you have a favorite costume of all time?

Monty: When I went to a Flyers Halloween party and I dressed up as a Hooters Girl. It wasn’t pretty but I got a lot of laughs, and I’m all about getting laughs from people. My leotards or whatever they’re called split halfway through the night. That was my best costume that got the most laughs.

Mayhem: I guess they don’t make those things in hockey player sizes.

Monty: No, they don’t.
