One-timers with … Troy Terry

The sophomore from Highlands Ranch, Colorado, has picked right up this season where he left off during DU’s second-half surge last spring. His 13 points and seven goals are second on the team, and two of his tallies are game-winners. A fifth-round selection by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Terry is also a huge football fan, but not in the way you might think. We fed him some sweet passes recently for One-timers.

Thanksgiving was last week, so let’s start with what you’re thankful for?

I’m thankful for my family and the boys, and how good my Dallas Cowboys are playing this year.

This interview was going to go well until you went there … moving on. So is Matt Marcinew your favorite teammate? (The senior passed by to inspect some of the 50 sticks he apparently keeps at the ready for games)

TT: Yeah, I’d put him in the top three.

MM: He’s my roommate on the road. I take care of Troy on the road, make sure he’s on time.

TT: He almost left me out to dry last trip, but I guess it was on me. I was almost late.

Back to Troy, what is your favorite Thanksgiving food?

I’m a big stuffing guy.

How much pride do you take in getting to play in your hometown?

A lot of pride. I grew up coming to these games, and to be out on the rink and wearing a DU sweater is pretty special.

Did you have a favorite DU player growing up?

Gabe Gauthier. He was my favorite player on those teams that won it back to back.

You’ve made lots of transitions from teams (Midgets to USNTDP to DU) over the past few years. How have you been able to assimilate so seamlessly to new environments?

I think the biggest thing is to stick to what you’re best at as a player and not try to worry too much about how other people want you to play or try to fit other molds. Just stick to what you’re good at and not try to overextend yourself.

How do you keep a balance between school and hockey?

There was definitely an adjustment period coming from high school, but a lot of it is making sure you get the school work done on Thursday before the weekend so you’re not worrying about it so Friday and Saturday can be straight hockey. Then during the week doing everything you can to make sure you’re caught up in class so you don’t get behind.

Do you have a favorite road trip?

Going to the Ralph in North Dakota is pretty amazing. It’s obviously the biggest crowd I’ve got to play in front of. They have so much energy. It’s pretty hard to play there but it’s still a cool experience.

Is there a comedian on the team we should know about?

I’d have to say Blake Hillman. I guess you would be able to guess it with the kinda gross mustache he’s got going on right now. He’s a pretty funny guy.

Are you particular about any of your gear?

When I tie my skates I have to tie my left one first every time or I won’t play good.

I’m a righty, too, so if I went over and picked up one of your sticks after this interview and started messing around with it you won’t be upset?

Not necessarily, no.

Did you play any other sports growing up?

I played lacrosse in fifth grade and flag football, but that was about it.

Did you pretend you were Tony Romo?

No, I was more of a wide receiver so I liked to pretend I was Dez Bryant out there, making catches.

Do you like music at all?

Yeah, I’m big fan of old-time rock ’n roll.

Finally! Two years of doing these interviews with DU hockey players and I don’t think I’ve heard that yet! Any favorite bands?

AC/DC, Foreigner, Journey, those type of bands.

What is your breakfast of champions?

I like to have my maple and brown sugar oatmeal and three eggs.

Do you have a favorite hockey memory growing up in Colorado?

I guess playing on my U16 Thunderbirds team, we were a good team all year but we weren’t really expected to be a top, top team in the country. We ended up really coming together as a team and we made it to the national championship game. Unfortunately we lost in the fourth overtime, but it was still pretty special to have a group of local guys from Colorado go and do so well on the national stage.
