What will Jack Devine do for an encore in 2024-25?

The good news is there will be an encore for the senior forward, who led defending national champion Denver with 27 goals and 56 points last season. After five other teammates from the NCAA title team left early to sign pro contracts, Devine bided his time and talked with the Florida Panthers (who drafted him in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft) about his development options. And here we are.

A Hobey Baker Award nominee last season, Devine  is one of just eight upperclassmen on a top-ranked Pioneers team that again faces mile-high expectations. Those continue with this weekend’s home-opening series against No. 19 Northeastern.

He’s taking it all in stride, and he took time this week to talk with MagnessMayhem.com founder Chris Bayee about a range of topics, starting with his decision to return for his senior season.

What went into your decision to return to DU?

There are a couple of factors. For me, continuing to see what I can be better at and where I can develop. I was fortunate enough to have a place like this where I’ve had success. I know the coaching staff and training staff have really helped me develop my game since I came in as a 17-year-old. I’m lucky to have an organization like the Florida Panthers to back my decision, who wants what’s best for me. I’m able to keep in contact with them, and they’re able to help me along during this year.

You were a Hobey nominee last season; where do you want to get better?

It’s getting bigger, stronger and faster. For me, this offseason was really big. I was able to put on 5-10 pounds, which was good. That will help for protecting pucks. And my first couple steps because I know in the NHL and the American League you have to be a great skater. That’s where I’ve seen improvement over the last couple of years, but I know I can take that to another area of my game and put some people on notice.

What is the story behind wearing No. 4 at DU?

I was initially going to wear 7, that was the number I grew up wearing, but that was taken when I got here. They gave me a couple of options, so I talked to my dad. There were a couple of legends that wore No. 4. It worked out where I liked it and have grown fond of it. I didn’t change after my freshman year even though I could have. I know there’s been some greats here who have worn it, like (2017 Hobey Baker winner) Will Butcher.

Does your family have a history in the game?

My sister (Katie, also a forward) played Division III at Saint Mary’s in Minnesota. She just graduated last year, but it was cool we got to share that bond and both be able to play college hockey at the same time.

Did you have a favorite team or player growing up?

I loved the Hawks and Jonathon Toews. I liked the Red Wings a bit because my dad is from Detroit, but at some age I had to pick so I went with the Hawks. It was a good decision. I loved Johnny Toews.

What’s your favorite meal?

A cheeseburger and fries, something simple. Park Burger is good. Portillos back home is really good.

Are you superstitious at all?

A little bit. The way I prepare helps me get in the game. … Not gear, just the rolling out, a couple of stretches I do.

What do you like to do away from the rink?

Hanging out with friends and family is probably my favorite. It’s nice when I’m home to relax. Here, it’s hanging out with my teammates and golfing or going swimming. Those are my two favorite activities here.

Who’s the golf shark on the team?

I haven’t gone out to play with him yet, but I’ve heard my roommate Alec Whipple is pretty good. A new guy, but he’s pretty good. Since I’ve been here, Bobby Brink was really good. Cam Wright was pretty good, too.

Do you have a favorite Halloween candy?

Snickers. I love Snickers.

Point of disclosure here: I heard you have a favorite Halloween costume.

What is it?

A Teletubby.

We had the Teletubbies going at one point. I was a construction worker one year, too. If me and a couple of guys want to dress up as Teletubbies again we might have to.

Would you ever consider rocking the Teletubby outfit to the rink?

Probably not. I don’t think that would be supported by some of the staff here. Away from the rink, I think it could happen.
