WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The Ice Breaker championship trophy is on the line tonight. The Pioneers opened their season with a 5-2 victory over No. 11 Notre Dame. Casey Dornbach scored two goals, and Jack Devine, Carter Mazur and McKade Webster each added one. Magnus Chrona stopped 18 shots. … The Black Bears pulled away from Air Force early in the third period for a 4-1 victory. Lynden Breen scored twice in a 100-second stretch early in the third period. Jacob Mucitelli stopped 20 of 21 shots.

The Black Bears have 16 new players on their roster this season. Coach Ben Barr said this week that his team has to play well collectively to have a chance to win, and they did that on Friday at Air Force, giving the Falcons very little room to create offense. … One big takeaway from DU’s victory Friday was its overall defensive play. Notre Dame had just six shots on goal through two periods. Another takeaway was the Pioneers’ speed will frustrate opponents. The mission now for DU is to continue to sync up its offense, which sounds crazy one day after it scored five goals vs. a ranked team.
