Extra point is good; DU survives Omaha opener

Freshman Brett Edwards scored in the fifth round of a shootout to help No. 4 Denver pick up an extra point in an NCHC matchup at Omaha on Friday.

The game between the Pioneers and Mavericks ended 1-1 after overtime, and that’s how it will go in the books for NCAA purposes, but the teams played on through another five-minute overtime (at 3-on-3) before the 10-player shootout. The tie extended Denver’s unbeaten streak against Omaha to 17 games.

Sophomore Tyler Ward scored roughly two and a half hours earlier for the Pioneers (15-4-4, 5-3-2-1 NCHC), just 4:34 into the game.

Noah Prokop scored a shorthanded goal for Omaha (9-10-4, 3-6-2-0 NCHC) 13 seconds into a DU power play 1:29 into the third period, and that was it for the scoring.

It was remarkable that a game with so much flow and up-and-down action yielded just two regulation goals. But it spoke to the excellence in net for both teams.

Denver freshman Magnus Chrona made 29 saves, 25 of them from the second period on as Omaha picked up steam as the game went along.

Freshman counterpart Isaiah Saville, a former Colorado Thunderbirds player, was superlative as well, making 22 of his 27 saves in the first two periods.

Notable

Junior center Jaakko Heikkinen returned to the DU lineup after missing the past three games due to injury. … Junior goalie Devin Cooley dressed for his first game in 2020, having missed the four previous ones, also because of an injury. He backed up Chrona.
