Shoot … the … puck …

Brett Edwards is happy to oblige that request from Denver hockey fans. That ability is one of the more notable things about the senior forward, who grew up in Alberta and played in that province’s junior hockey league before becoming a Pioneer in 2019.

Another fun fact about Edwards is he earned family bragging rights when Denver defeated Michigan in the national semifinals. His younger brother Ethan is a defenseman for the Wolverines. Ethan was a fourth-round pick (120th overall) of the New Jersey Devils in 2020. So you can bet there were some competitive battles growing up.

Brett graciously took some time after a recent DU practice to talk with MagnessMayhem.com about highlights of his hockey career and a very interesting teammate.

What have been your favorite things about DU and Denver in general?

To come to such a great school as well as such a great hockey organization has been awesome. It’s a smaller campus, easier to get around. You don’t have 70,000 kids running around campus so you get to know a lot of athletes and other students as well on a personal level, so that’s always nice. There are smaller class sizes, so I’ve enjoyed a little more face time with professors (Brett is a finance major). I’ve loved every second of it.

Anyone who has seen play probably has noticed one of your standout characteristics is you can really shoot the puck, both with a quick release and a lot of velocity. How did you develop your shot?

I’ve always been pretty well known for my shot. I guess just a lot of reps when I was younger. The right stick. A lot of guys tend you use a higher flex of stick. I’m a smaller guy, but I’m also around 200 pounds. I use a pretty light flex stick, so I use that to my advantage. It’s just the mechanics and the equipment I’m using.

Are you picky about your gear?

Not as much as others. For some things, yeah. Skates and sticks would be what I’m most picky about. Most everything else I’m pretty easy going. I’ll wear stuff until it wears out. But there are definitely guys who are running to get new stuff all the time.

What is your favorite road trip?

Last year was the first time we got to go to Western (Michigan) since I’ve been here. Playing in front of that fan base and at that rink is pretty wild. I’m looking forward to going back this season. Then of course going to North Dakota and playing at the Ralph is always fun.

What have been some of your favorite hockey memories?

Of course the national championship. That’s the highlight for sure. Having the opportunity to come to Denver and play hockey here for four years is just something I’ll never forget and I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.

Who’s the World’s Most Interesting Man on the team?

There’s a lot of interesting guys in the locker room, but I’m going to have to go with Justin Lee.

Any particular reason?

Everything about him. He’s got the sense of humor. He’s got the comebacks. And it’s pretty easy to get under his skin so guys like doing that. He gives it back.

He’s told me he spends a substantial amount of time watching farming videos?

Oh yeah. That’s the main thing that came to my mind. Everyone comes to college wondering what they’re going to do with the rest of their life, but he’s known since he was born.

Are there any comedians on the team?

That would be McKade Webster for sure. Or Jack Caruso.

Who were some big influences growing up?

I had favorite players in the NHL growing up. One coach in particular in midget was a big help in me going from midget to junior, making that jump. He helped build habits on and off the ice that have helped me to this day. It’s putting the work in every day on and off the ice.

Do you have any rituals as you’re getting ready for a game?

No, I’m not too superstitious. I get dressed the same way every time, left skate, right skate, left shin pad, right shin pad, but that’s about it.

What’s the breakfast of champions?

I like eggs and bacon. I’ll make a sandwich out of it on a bagel. I usually toss some fruit in there at the end.

It’s October, so I have to ask what is your all-time favorite Halloween costume?

A couple years ago Justin and I dressed up in Talladega Nights theme, Rickey Bobby and Cal Naughton Jr. That was a good one.
