No. 5 Denver overcame a pesky Miami team for the second night in a row, pulling away in the third period on goals by Ryan Barrow and McKade Webster for a 4-2 NCHC victory at Oxford, Ohio.
The victory gave the first-place Pioneers (18-5-1, 11-3 NCHC) a 7-0-1 record in their past eight games as well as a season sweep of the Redhawks (4-20-2, 1-14-1). Cameron Wright and Sean Behrens also scored for DU. Brett Stapley had three assists and five on the weekend. Magnus Chrona made 18 saves for Denver, which fashioned a 46-20 shots-on-goal edge and an 83-41 total shots margin.
Behrens had the first period’s lone tally – his third of the season, and Wright gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead with his third of the weekend and team-high 16th overall early in the second.
As they did Friday, the Redhawks came back with consecutive goals, this time by Matthew Barbolini and Jack Olmstead. The former was a power-play strike, while the later came with 56 seconds to play in the second.
Barrow got the winner by collecting a rebound in the slot of Stapley’s nice dipsy doodle move to the net and firing past Ludvig Persson (42 saves) 5:42 into the third. Webster scored into an empty net with 1:08 to play.
Barrow’s fifth goal of the season tied his career high, as did his 14th point. Stapley’s big weekend gave him 30 points, tying his career high.
The Pioneers play host to St. Cloud State next weekend.
