Denver recruit Bobby Brink extended the Pioneers’ run of having a player selected at the NHL Entry Draft to 17 years when the Philadelphia Flyers picked him with the third pick of the second round (34th overall) on Saturday at Vancouver, British Columbia.
The Flyers traded up to take Brink, who was selected the United States Hockey League’s Forward of the Year this past season.
Brink is one of seven incoming freshmen for the Pioneers. He was ranked 19th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting Service and is coming off a season in which he put up 68 points (35 goals) in 43 games for Sioux City. His 1.29 points per game average was the 14th best in USHL history.
Brink also played for Team USA at the World Junior A Challenge and the U-18 World Championships. He was the tournament MVP for the World Junior A Challenge gold medalists.
Brink will join five returning Pioneers who are NHL draft picks – Slava Demin (Vegas, 2018), Cole Guttman (Tampa Bay, 2017), Ian Mitchell (Chicago, 2017), Emilio Pettersen (Calgary, 2018) and Brett Stapley (Montreal, 2018) – as well as fellow incoming freshman Magnus Chrona (Tampa Bay, 2018).
Brink and Demin were among 44 players chosen to participate in the 2019 U.S. World Junior Summer Showcase in late July at Plymouth, Mich. The event is part of Team USA’s selection process for its 2020 World Junior Championships team. Demin had 14 points and a plus-19 in 41 games during his freshman season.
