DU can’t penetrate wall around Miami net in 3-1 loss

If you didn’t get back to your seat shortly after periods started Friday night, you missed all of the offense at Magness Arena.

Miami did all of its damage early in the first two periods and then sat back and watched goaltender Ryan Larkin stone No. 7 Denver time and again in a 3-1 RedHawks win.

Larkin made 46 saves for Miami, which entered the game on a 1-10-1 slide and in last place in the NCHC. With the loss, the Pioneers (16-8-4, 8-8-2-2 NCHC) fell into a tie for fourth with North Dakota, which defeated Minnesota Duluth, 4-1.

Ryan Siroky scored the first two goals of the game for the RedHawks (11-16-4, 5-12-2-1), and Karch Bachman followed Siroky’s second strike with one of his own 47 seconds later just 2:40 into the second period.

The Pioneers, who outshot the guests 47-21, regained a bit of momentum 3:35 into the third on Ian Mitchell‘s power-play goal but they could get no more as Miami did a good job keeping them to the outside.

Devin Cooley made 18 saves for the Pioneers.

Notes

Freshman center Brett Stapley, who is tied for fourth on DU with 18 points, missed the game because of an injury sustained Saturday at Duluth. Sophomore Kohen Olischefski moved into Stapley’s slot on the top line between Liam Finlay and Emilio Pettersen. … Sophomore defenseman Ryan Orgel made his season debut.

Denver’s three stars

  1. Ian Mitchell. His goal got the Pioneers back in it.
  2. Kohen Olischefski. Fared well in a top-line role, won 14 of 23 face-offs.
  3. Jack Doremus. The sophomore was an Energizer Bunny all game and generated five shots on goal.
