Overview
The Pioneers looked sharp in their opener Friday at Air Force, scoring twice in the first 8:38 and not looking back in a 4-1 victory. Four players, including freshmen linemates Emilio Pettersen and Cole Guttman, scored goals and Devin Cooley made 22 saves for his first NCAA win. … The Chargers enter the game having scored one goal in three games, including Friday night’s 1-0 loss at Colorado College. UAH goaltender Mark Sinclair made 46 saves. The Chargers were swept by Miami last weekend. … UAH coach Mike Corbett played at DU from 1993-97.
Keys to the game
Don’t look back – Denver was at its best Friday when it just played and didn’t overthink things, defenseman Ian Mitchell said afterward. Against a struggling team with a hot goalie, the Pioneers will have to remain focused and not let a few big saves derail them.
Energy – How will all of the Pioneers’ young players handle back-to-back NCAA games? Playing in front of a Magness Arena crowd should help.
Keeping cool – DU’s defense did a good job of preventing Air Force from getting to rebounds and having second or third looks on Friday. Devin Cooley made some terrific saves and was very good when the Falcons crashed the net, but there also were some stray rebounds that could have led to goals had not DU’s D cleared them out.
