Nick Meldrum has answered the call of his country.
The Denver equipment manager was selected as the United States equipment manager for the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship to be held from Dec. 26 through Jan. 5, 2019 in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia, USA Hockey announced Thursday.
This won’t be Meldrum’s first experience with USA Hockey as he served as the equipment manager for the U.S. National Team Development Program for two years before coming to DU 10 years ago.
Meldrum has a wide array of duties for the Pioneers, chiefly the purchase, distribution, maintenance and repair of equipment for the hockey program’s players and staff. In addition, he oversees equipment room operations for the entire athletic department.
The WJC duties will keep him away from the Pioneers for two weekends – the Dec. 28-29 trip to Massachusetts for games at Merrimack and UMass-Lowell and the following weekend’s series at Wisconsin. He will be reunited with two former Pioneers assistant coaches at the WJC – David Lassonde, who is now at Dartmouth, and Steve Miller, who is at Ohio State.
He spoke with Magness Mayhem about his selection.
