Like many of the rest of us, several current, future and past Denver hockey players are going camping this summer. Development camping, that is.
At least nine Pioneers of all ilks will be at NHL teams’ development camps this summer.
Six current Pioneers are at camps or will be shortly, a list that includes 2018-19 season captain Logan O’Connor, who has the shortest distance to travel. O’Connor, who had a career-high 21 points during his junior season, will participate in the Colorado Avalanche’s camp starting Friday.
Rising junior defenseman Michael Davies is at the St. Louis Blues’ prospect in his hometown this week, just as rising sophomore forward Ryan Barrow is with the Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals.
Rising senior forward Jarid Lukosevicius, whose career-high 21 goals were second on DU last season, will be at the Vancouver Canucks’ camp next week. And rising sophomore Kohen Olischefski will join former teammate Dylan Gambrell at the San Jose Sharks’ camp in July.
Rising sophomore defenseman Ian Mitchell, a 2017 second-round pick of Chicago, will participate in the Blackhawks’ camp later in July. Mitchell, who put up 30 points in his first NCAA season, may be joined by his defense partner last season, Blake Hillman, who signed with Chicago in the days after DU’s season ended and ultimately played in four games for the Hawks.
Incoming freshman goaltender Filip Larsson is attending the Detroit Red Wings’ camp but is not expected to skate in it, while former Pioneer Troy Terry, who signed with Anaheim’ after DU’s season is at the Ducks’ camp.
Henrik Borgstrom, who signed with Florida after this past season, is not listed on the Panthers’ development camp roster.
Additionally, three incoming freshmen who have been drafted in the past two summers will not participate in their respective teams’ camps because they’re enrolled in summer school – center Cole Guttman (Tampa Bay, 2017), defenseman Slava Demin (Vegas, 2018) and forward Brett Stapley (Montreal, 2018).
It’s unknown if a fourth incoming freshman, forward Emilio Pettersen, will attend Calgary’s camp. The Flames’ website profiled Pettersen earlier today.
