Denver defenseman Ian Mitchell was one of three freshmen unanimously selected to the NCHC’s all-rookie team, as chosen by the league’s coaches, the NCHC announced Tuesday.
Mitchell led all Denver defensemen with 22 points (20 assists) in the regular season. Sixteen of those points came in NCHA play. Mitchell’s 16 power-play assists ranked second among NCAA defensemen and his 22 points tied for third most among freshmen defensemen. A second-round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, Mitchell also led the Pioneers with 43 blocked shots.
Coaches voted for six forwards, four defensemen and two goaltenders, but were not permitted to vote for their own players.
Minnesota-Duluth defenseman Scott Perunovich and St. Cloud State goaltender David Hrenak also were unanimous picks. The three forwards on the team are North Dakota’s Grant Mismash and the St. Cloud duo of Blake Lizotte and Easton Brodzinski.
The NCHC will announce its All-Conference Teams on Wednesday and its individual award finalists on Thursday.
