The Pioneers have spoken: Breaking down the DU Player Survey

Earlier this month Magness Mayhem surveyed the DU hockey team about various player characteristics.

Fourteen of the 25 players on the roster responded (56 percent) through an online survey. All results were anonymous. I’d like to thank the DU players for taking the time to take the survey.

I’d also like to thank the following sponsors for helping make this possible:

What follows is the fifth part of the series, which analyzes the results of the 20-question survey. The first four parts, which tackled various categories, were published last week. You can click below to read each of the four parts of the survey.

Part 1: Skating and strength

Part 2: Shooting and stick handling

Part 3: Passing, vision and face-offs

Part 4: Defense, positioning and leadership

Part 5: Breaking down the results

What was the widest margin of votes within a category?

14 – Best top-end skating speed – Logan O’Connor

12 – Most consistently wins face-offs – Tyson McLellan

8 – Most accurate shot – Henrik Borgstrom

8 – Best passer in traffic – Troy Terry

Behind the numbers: O’Connor was a unanimous pick and McLellan was very close in another skill-based attribute. Borgstrom’s and Terry’s appearances in their respective categories should come as no surprise.

What were the highest vote totals in a category?

14 – Best top-end skating speed (Logan O’Connor)

13 – Most consistent winner of important face-offs (Tyson McLellan)

10 – Most accurate shot (Henrik Borgstrom)

10 – Best paser in traffic (Troy Terry)

Behind the numbers: This is directly connected to the widest margin, just another way of looking at it.

Which categories had the closest margins of voting?

Quickest shot release – 1 vote separated Jarid Lukosevicius (5 votes) and Henrik Borgstrom (4)

Best overall stickhandler – 1 vote separated Troy Terry (7 votes) and Henrik Borgstrom (6)

Best at maneuvering through traffic with the puck – 1 vote separated Troy Terry (7 votes) and Henrik Borgstrom (6)

Best overall hockey sense – 1 vote separated Troy Terry (4) and Henrik Borgstrom, Dylan Gambrell and Tyson McLellan (3 each)

Most positionally sound player – 1 vote separated Adam Plant (4 votes) and Tanner Jaillet (3)

Behind the numbers: Five categories – one quarter of the survey – came down to one vote. Three are skill based and two are more intelligence based (though skill weighs in as well). This tells me the Pioneers have a lot going on in both departments … which is what you’d expect from one of the top teams in the nation.

Which categories had the most players named?

7 – Overall toughest player

7 – Most positionally sound player

7 – Hardest worker off the ice

7 – Most resilient player

Behind the numbers: Almost one third of the roster appeared in four categories that have at least as much to do with sweat as skill.

Which category had the lowest vote total by a leader?

4 – Best overall hockey sense – Troy Terry

4 – Most positionally sound – Adam Plant

5 – Best functional strength – Tariq Hammond

5 – Quickest release on his shot – Jarid Lukosevicius

5 – Best breakout passes – Michael Davies

5 – Most resilient player – Tariq Hammond

Behind the numbers: This is one category that likely is affected by the amount of responses. What’s interesting is only two of the categories (positioning and resiliency) had the largest amounts of players named. Release and hockey sense were among those categories tied for smallest margin (1 vote).

Which player made the most overall appearances?

15 – Dylan Gambrell

12 – Henrik Borgstrom

9 – Tariq Hammond, Troy Terry

7 – Logan O’Connor

6 – Adam Plant

5 – Colin Staub

4 – Michael Davies, Liam Finlay, Jarid Lukosevicius, Sean Mostrom

2 – Devin Cooley, Blake Hillman, Rudy Junda, Tyson McLellan, Ian Mitchell

1 – Ryan Barrow, Jack Doremus, Jake Durflinger, Erich Fear, Tanner Jaillet, Ryan Orgel

Behind the numbers: If it seems like Gambrell can do it all, it’s because in the eyes of his peers he pretty much can. The junior was named in 75 percent of the categories, which is a remarkable number and speaks to how well rounded his game is. Borgstrom is not far behind, which further reinforces something coach Jim Montgomery has said from time to time – that there is almost no limit to what the sophomore can do if he sets his mind to it. How revered is the captain? Well, Hammond joins Terry in appearing in almost half of the categories. … 80 percent of the roster was named at least once and almost 60 percent more than once.

Which player was voted the top person in a category the most times?

Troy Terry – 4

Tariq Hammond – 3

Logan O’Connor – 3

Henrik Borgstrom – 2

Jarid Lukosevicius – 2

Michael Davies – 1

Liam Finlay – 1

Dylan Gambrell – 1

Tyson McLellan – 1

Adam Plant – 1

Colin Staub – 1

Behind the numbers: All top six forwards are present atop at least one category, with two other forwards joining this list, while three defensemen are. Given how close Terry and Borgstrom were in so many categories, the results could easily be flipped.

The bottom line: The Pioneers have a wealth of skill, and when they’re operating at peak potential it can be something to behold. This survey might seemed skewed toward a smaller group of players, but these top-end players are elite college players – many of whom could enjoy lengthy careers at the next level. Behind them is large group of players that any college program would be glad to have, they’re just overshadowed – for now – by a group of rare talents.
