Terry drops a five-spot in his return to DU’s lineup

After what Troy Terry went through at the World Junior Championships this past week, Saturday had to be a bit anticlimactic. But you wouldn’t know it by how he and his newly comprised line with Henrik Borgstrom and Dylan Gambrell played.

Terry scored two goals and drew assists on three others in his first game back with Denver, a 6-1 blowout of Arizona State, since helping Team USA win gold at the WJC, in part due to his three shootout goals in a semifinal against Russia and another in the gold-medal victory against Canada.

“You’re coming off the high (of World Juniors), he was dancing out there,” Denver coach Jim Montgomery said. “Hopefully he can go five points every night the rest of the year. I’d like our chances.”

His linemates added six more points, including a two-goal game by Borgstrom for the second night in a row, giving Arizona State (7-16-1) a devil of a time in the process.

“It was fun. Those guys are such good players and make such good plays  with the puck,” said Terry, whose two strikes gave him 11 goals on the season, one fewer than team leader Borgstrom.

The second rout in a row by Denver (14-4-4) capped a week like none other for Terry, who was the subject of a video tribute and standing ovation during a first-period break.

“That was pretty awesome, that was pretty special just to see how much support I had back here for over here for what happened over there,” said the sophomore, a 2015 draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks. “I get a lot of attention for the shootouts but (Team USA) played such a good team game in both of those.

“Just the amount of tweets and support I’ve gotten from people all over just showed me how many people are behind us.”

As fun as the World Juniors were for Terry, who is from Highlands Ranch, just south of Denver, there is no place like home.

“These guys are my best friends. As soon as we won that game I was looking forward to getting back,” he said. “There’s nothing like putting on a Pioneers jersey and playing with these guys.

“I got back early (Friday) so I don’t think they expected me back so early. They were really happy for me, and I was looking forward to seeing them. Everyone was hugging me and razzing me a little bit about it.”

As much as the night was about celebrating Terry and Team USA’s accomplishment, the Pioneers (14-4-4) managed to play a near-perfect game and pick up their second win of 2017, outshooting the Sun Devils 48-18, dominating in the face-off circle (40-22) and not taking a penalty until 3:31 remained.

For good measure senior Evan Cowley nearly pitched a shutout in his third start of the season. Only a power-play goal by Brett Gruber with 2:16 left spoiled his night. For the second night in a row fellow senior Greg Ogard came on in relief in the third.

Super line

Montgomery plans to keep the Terry-Borgstrom-Gambrell line together. After an 11-point night, it’s worth a shot.

“That’s the plan. Let’s see how effective they can be and how much they can grow,” the coach said. “(Matt) Marcinew and Luko (Jarid Lukosevicius) played really well together last year on a line with Grant Arnold Hopefully they can develop secondary scoring as the (Tyson) McLellan line has and a fourth line of (Emil) Romig, Evan Ritt and Colin Staub that’s pretty good depth in your lineup all of a sudden.”

Lukosevicius and linemate Kevin Conley each had goals Saturday, and Marcinew added an assist to go with Lukosevicius’ two helpers.

Road warriors

The Pioneers’ next four games are on the road – at Western Michigan next weekend and at St. Cloud State the following weekend. DU swept WMU earlier in the season at Magness Arena, where it has just five more regular-season games remaining.
