One-timers with … Greg Ogard

Greg Ogard made his second career appearance in Friday’s 5-1 victory against Arizona State and played well, making a huge glove save in the closing minute. What better time to share our one-timers conversation with man known as Ogie?

What is the breakfast of champions?

I’m a big fan of omelets at the cafeteria here. I always go ham and cheese omelet and then maybe some toast with a little bit of peanut butter.

ogard-mugWhen you were looking at schools, what was the main appeal with DU?

I loved the city of Denver. I liked the mountains. It’s so beautiful here. I also liked that on campus we’re separated a bit from downtown but it’s only a 10- or 15-minute drive so you get the best of both worlds there. And then the school itself was really strong academically, which I liked. I liked what the program stood for and everyone had really good things to say so I was really interested in that aspect as well.

What are you studying?

I’m a finance major and an accounting minor. It’s not too bad. We’re all good at managing our workload and getting things done on time so we can have our fair share of video game time.

Who’s the top gamer on the team?

We have a pack of guys who are huge on Call of Duty. I suck at it, but Blake Hillman, Matt VanVoorhis, Tanner Jaillet, Troy Terry, Jarid Lukosevicius, there’s a bunch of them that all play together. They don’t let me in; I’m way too bad. Janny (Evan Janssen) and Packy (Munson) love playing NHL, and Packy always gets blasted. It’s pretty funny to hear him freak out nightly because Janny’s giving him the business.

Did you have a favorite athlete growing up?

I loved Patrick Roy. That was my all-time idol growing up. As a goalie, he’s one of the best goalies if not the best. And I loved the swagger he had on the ice. I remember when he was playing for the Candiens, he’d make a huge save and then wink at the shooter. Or when he was chirping (Jeremy) Roenick, saying he the Stanley Cup rings were blocking his ears. I loved the way he played the game and the passion he had for it.

What was your all-time favorite Christmas present?

I used to love getting hockey stuff. Growing up it was always the expensive hockey gear, which I was sure to hear about. My aunt lives in Denver and has a cabin up in the mountains so those would always be fun trips to come out here and go skiing.

Are you particular about any of your gear?

I used to be way more particular, but I don’t like it when anybody touches my stuff. It’s kind of like a pet peeve of mine. I know Tanner and Evan and I think Packy are all the same way. We leave the locker and stuff is one way. If we come back and something’s changed we know someone’s been messing with it. None of us take too kindly to that.

You mentioned your dad played goalie. What levels did he play?

He grew up in Minnesota, so he played high school hockey in Duluth, and then I think he stopped after high school. He went to University of Minnesota and then Minnesota-Duluth. I don’t think he played in college, but he’s played in men’s leagues for as long as his knees could hold up. He’s unfortunately retired now, but I used to always beg to go to his games with him because it was fun to play with him as a little kid. … I played forward at a couple of men’s league games because they stopped letting me play goalie for the old guys. It was always fun. When I would play against him I always knew not to score on him or I was walking home after the game.

Do you like music?

I do. I like listening to music but I’m not really into it. I like listening to what other people put together who are more into it, guys like Evan Cowley and Dylan Gambrell and Sean Mostrom all have playlists they put together. I just piggyback and listen to what they bring.

Do you have a favorite memory playing hockey?

Last year, the Battle on Blake game was for sure my favorite memory all the way around. To walk around Coors Field, see the locker room and then play CC, which is a huge game for us, out on a baseball field with all the fans there, it was a really cool experience. One I won’t forget. … It was crazy to look up from the field and realize how big the stadium is.
