Team updates: The Badgers defeated Colorado College, 2-1, on Friday night at World Arena, outshooting the Tigers 33-12. Will Johnson and Grant Besse scored goals 1:24 apart late in the second period to lift Wisconsin. The Pioneers overcame penalties and three Air Force rallies to win in overtime, 4-3, on Jarid Lukosevicious’ rebound goal. It was sophomore night for DU as fellow second-year players Colin Staub, Troy Terry and Dylan Gambrell also tallied to help Denver run its unbeaten streak to 11 games.
Offense
Besse, a senior alternate captain, leads the young Badgers with 12 points. Sophomore captain Luke Kunin, a Minnesota Wild draft pick, has a team-high six goals. Sophomore Seamus Malone (11 points), freshman Trent Frederic (10) and senior Corbin McGuire (5) each has four goals. Overall, Wisconsin scores 3.18 goals per game. …
DU’s four goals Friday matched a season high. Freshman Henrik Borgstrom leads the Pioneers with 13 points. He and Terry (10 points) have a team-best six goals apiece. Senior captain Will Butcher has 12 points. Denver scores 2.54 goals per game.
Defense
Wisconsin gives up an average of three goals per game. Freshman goaltender Jack Berry made 11 saves Friday for the Badgers. Sophomore Matt Jurusik has played in more games, but Berry’s stats (3-0, 0.86 goals-against average and .950 save percentage) are vastly better than Jurusik’s (4-4, 4.16, .852). …
Tanner Jaillet (8-1-3) started his 11th game in a row Friday and gave up three goals for just the second time in that run. His 1.71 gaa and .930 save percentage are among the nation’s best. The Pioneers’ collective goals-against average of 1.85 is second in the nation.
Special teams
The Badgers are excellent here. Johnson’s goal Friday came on the power play, and the team connects at a 22 percent rate. UW’s penalty kill is effect more than 91 percent of the time. Like DU, Wisconsin doesn’t usually take a lot of penalties. …
Gambrell’s came on a two-man advantage. The Pioneers connect more than 17 percent of the time on the PP. The penalty kill, which gave up two goals to Air Force Friday, sits at 84 percent.
