From time to time we have the opportunity to sit down with DU coach Jim Montgomery for 2 minutes to talk about an upcoming opponent and whatever else flies into our mind. The Pioneers travel to Air Force on Friday before playing host to former WCHA rival Wisconsin on Saturday. Here’s what the coach had to say:
This weekend is a bit unique in that you play two different teams – neither of which is in the NCHC – at two different locations. How do you approach a weekend like this?
We look at this more like an NCAA Tournament or NCHC Tournament weekend where you are playing (two different teams). We just focus on the first game. We haven’t discussed Wisconsin one bit. The coaches have looked it, especially Tenz (David Tenzer) as the video guy. We haven’t talked about it to the team yet. We need to prepare for a really good, hard-working team in Air Force, at Air Force, which is really hard place to play.
Speaking of Air Force, what is your read on their team this season?
They have great depth and they have great work ethic. … I remember (coach) Frank (Serratore) telling me that in their exhibition game their fifth line scored three goals. There’s not that much of a separation between their first and their fourth lines. But they all work really hard, they’re tenacious. And they’re a well-coached team that plays fast.
Thanksgiving is tomorrow, so what are you thankful for? And, what is your favorite food item from the day?
I’m thankful for my family. My favorite food? Honestly it’s the post turkey-stuffing-cranberry sandwiches with mayo. If I have to go with what’s hot, it’s mashed potatoes and gravy. … But the sandwich, oh that’s good.
May you all have an enjoyable, relaxing Thanksgiving!
