North Dakota coach Brad Berry has said he will send out his top checkers against DU’s Pacific Rim Line in Thursday’s Frozen Four semifinal. That means secondary scoring will be of paramount importance for the Pioneers, and one line that created some havoc is the line of senior Gabe Levin, junior Emil Romig and freshman Colin Staub.
Staub, who is from Colorado Springs, has four of his five goals since Feb. 20, and twice scored against Nebraska-Omaha in a first-round NCHC series a few weeks ago.
The freshman took a few minutes to bury a few sweet feeds from the Mayhem recently.
MagnessMayhem: Do you follow any playoff traditions?
Colin Staub: Yeah, I haven’t gotten this far in the playoffs before so the beard is getting a little longer than I’m used to … which isn’t very long. I don’t have many traditions, it’s just keeping it the same way I have all year.
Do you have a favorite pregame meal?
I love our pregame meal – rice and chicken. I love chicken because you can’t play hockey without chicken. Then I have some of the soup they make for us before home games. That’s some of my favorite soup I’ve ever had.
Do you have a favorite hockey player?
Peter Forsberg. I grew up watching him play for the Avs. He’s who I wanted to try to match my game to. I’m nowhere near as good as Peter Forsberg was .
Is there any piece of gear you’re particular about?
If there’s a chip in my stick it’s in the back of my head. I feel like it’s starting to break. If I can get a new stick I get new stick.
What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen in hockey?
That’s a hard one. I saw a video a long time ago of a player skating off the ice and his stick was perpendicular to the entry way to getting off the ice. The stick rams into the doorway, clotheslines the kid and he falls backward. That might be the funniest thing I’ve seen.
Do you like music?
Yeah. I’m a big classic rock and indie/alternative guy. … Bruce Springsteen, I’ve been listening to him a lot, especially lately. He’s one of my favorites.
Do you have a favorite sport other than hockey?
Lacrosse. I grew up playing it and I love watching it. Once our season’s over with I’m excited to watch the DU lacrosse team a little bit, too.
Ever thought of doing the Bo Jackson two-sport approach?
No, I stopped playing lacrosse when I was in about eighth grade to focus on hockey. So I don’t think I’d be anywhere near the skill level I’d need to be.
What is the breakfast of champions?
I like smoothies. I get some spinach and some frozen strawberries, bananas, some yogurt, then throw in some miscellaneous fruits and that’s my breakfast.
Is there a class clown in the locker room?
I would say Trevor Moore. Nolan Zajac is pretty funny. Troy Terry is pretty funny.
Lastly, and most importantly, who has the better mullet: Jaromir Jagr or Evan Janssen?
Oh man, Jaromir Jagr has the classic mullet. I’m going to have to go with him.
