The DU forward burst onto the scene last season with a team-high 45 points as a freshman, and he’s back at it as a sophomore with 10 points (including a team-high five goals) in 12 games. Opponents are devoting much more attention to the 2014 Boston Bruins draft pick (Round 4, 116th overall) this season, but the Langley, British Columbia, native is taking it in stride. A man of few words but much offense, he paused from his post-practice shooting drills recently to take a few sweet feeds from Mayhem and Mayhem Jr.
Mayhem Jr.: What’s your favorite superfood?
Heinen: Quinoa
Mayhem: What is your favorite pre-game meal?
Heinen: Chicken and pasta
Mayhem: Who is your favorite hockey player?
Heinen: Sidney Crosby
Mayhem Jr.: What piece of your gear should I not play with?
Heinen: My sticks
Mayhem: What’s the craziest goal you’ve ever seen?
Heinen: In the (2015) playoffs when (Chicago’s) Andrew Shaw put it in with his head. That was pretty crazy.
Mayhem: Are you adding that to the arsenal?
Heinen: Probably not. I’m not good enough to do that, and it wouldn’t count anyway.
Mayhem: Favorite arena rock song?
Heinen (now warming up to us if response length is any indication): I like U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name”. I grew up watching the Canucks and they always came out to that.
Mayhem Jr.: When you need a good laugh in the locker room, who do you turn to?
Heinen: For me it’s gotta be Grant Arnold
Mayhem: Do you have a favorite sport other than hockey?
Heinen: I like playing golf in the offseason. I’m not great at it but it’s fun.
Mayhem: The breakfast of champions is?
Heinen: Eggs and hash browns
Mayhem: What are you thankful for?
Heinen: My health, my family and my teammates
