What to watch for: CC vs. DU

The Gold Pan series faces off Friday night at Magness Arena at 7:30 p.m. and continues Saturday at 7 p.m. at World Arena in Colorado Springs.

TV/Radio: Root Sports (Friday)/AM 1600

The series: DU holds a 165-116-17 all-time lead and swept the four games last season.

Here are some things to watch for:

Home vs. Road: The Pioneers are 3-0 at home but 0-3 on the road. DU is 1-2 on Friday nights and 2-1 on Saturday nights.

Tiger killer: Sophomore forward Danton Heinen piled up nine points, including five goals, the four meetings last season. He had a three-point game, including two goals, against Boston College last Friday and could be primed for another big weekend.

Extra effort: The Pioneers’ power play came to life with two goals vs. BC then went back into hibernation against Boston University. DU is hitting at just 13 percent (3-23) with the man advantage. Colorado College’s penalty kill has been strong of late with the Tigers killing off 21 of their past 23 penalties. Conversely, the Tigers have just one power-play goal in their past 29 chances. That plays to a relative DU strength — the Pioneers’ PK finishes the job 85 percent of the time.

Masked men: The Tigers have played two goalies — freshman Jacob Nehama and junior Tyler Marble — thus far. Marble has better numbers with a 3.06 goals-against average and .904 save percentage. That would put him between DU’s duo of Evan Cowley and Tanner Jaillet. Cowley has a 2.55 gas and .912 save percentage. Jaillet is at 3.22 and .877 but has the Pioneers’ only shutout this season. Still, one wonders if his leash is a bit shorter after getting pulled on Saturday vs. Boston University.

The points: While CC has gotten a lion’s share of its scoring from underclassmen (22 of 31 points and 9 of 11 goals), the DU attack has been very balanced. Of the nine Pioneers with three or more points, there are two freshmen, two seniors, three juniors and two sophomores. Junior defenseman Will Butcher and freshman winger Dylan Gambrell lead the Pioneers with six points. Twelve players have scored goals for the Pioneers and the conference’s leading sniper a season ago, Trevor Moore, isn’t one of them. Look for the junior to have a big weekend. Four defensemen – Butcher, Nolan Zajac, Matt VanVoorhis and Nick Neville – have lit the lamp for DU.
