Scouting No. 4 Boston College

The Game: Friday, 5 p.m. MDT on 1600/AM

BC’s record: 4-1, on a three-game win streak after a 2-1 loss to RPI on opening weekend.

Last weekend: Swept Colorado College, 3-0 and 5-0, as junior Thatcher Demko posted his second and third shutouts in a row.

Overview: The Eagles’ forwards so far have generated most of their offense this season, with freshman Casey Fitzgerald the only defenseman among their top nine scorers. That development wasn’t totally unexpected after the early departures of defensemen Noah Hanifin (playing with Carolina Hurricanes) and Mike Matheson (playing for Florida’s AHL team in Portland, Maine). … Their defense isn’t afraid to play physically and they’ll take quite a few penalties as a result.

In net: Demko has been lights out so far, winning four of five games and posting three consecutive shutouts. He’s allowed just three goals in five games (.60 GAA) and stopping more than 97 percent of the shots that get to him. Demko had offseason surgery on his hips, and he clearly is moving better than he did last season. He twice has been Team USA’s goalie at the World Junior Championships. A rival coach told me that Demko was very good a season ago but didn’t have to be great because BC’s defense with Hanifin, Matheson, Ian McCoshen, Steve Santini, Teddy Doherty and Scott Savage was so good.

Offense: A quartet of juniors has been key up front so far – Ryan Fitzgerald (5 points), Austin Cangelosi (4), Chris Calnan (4) and Adam Gilmour (3) – and sophomores Zach Sanford (6) and Alex Tuch (4), and freshmen Miles Wood (6), Colin White (3) and Jeremy Bracco (3) supplement that strength in a deep group. (As reader Puck Swami pointed out in his timely comment, Bracco left the program Wednesday morning and might be headed to play in the OHL) Casey Fitzgerald and captain Teddy Doherty in particular are threats from the blue line, but the rest of the group is capable of doing damage. The rival coach characterized BC’s 2014-15 season as a bit down for its offense by its standards, but he expects their talented group of freshmen forwards to help revive it as the season goes on.

Did you know? An NCAA-high 14 Eagles have been drafted by NHL teams. … Eagles defenseman Scott Savage and the Pioneers’ Trevor Moore were longtime teammates in minor hockey for the LA Selects 95s, who won consecutive USA Hockey Youth Hockey National titles and nearly won a third in a row in 2010.
